THE ‘BODMIN FIVE’ HAVE ARRIVED!
Recently these five ponies arrived at the Sanctuary from Bodmin Moor. Currently they are under assessment by our equine staff team, led by Sally our Senior Animal Carer who is totally in her element. Our vet is also on standby but for the moment they are all impossible to catch, so we are working on that as a priority. The five are still quite wild although not as wild as the foals were that were brought in last Christmas but at the moment they are difficult to handle. Their names are 'Summer' the lighter grey mare who has a colt foal and who appears to be the mother of the other two mares. Dotty the dark mare has a filly foal. Dreckley is the light colour mare and the foals are Robson the colt and Sweetpea the filly foal. These ponies are a family of five and needed to be rescued and given sanctuary so they have come to live at Bolenowe. Now the work begins because they are all in a poor state but some more than others.
MORE ON THE BODMIN FIVE!
Yesterday was quite a big day in the lives of the Five, they are a family unit but we needed to separate them so we can begin their rehabilitation. We managed to separate the two younger mares and the baby Sweetpea into the loose box opposite. They can still all see each other and are quite close so that's good. The reason for separating them was to give Summer the older mare and mother of the other two mares Dotty and Dreckley some space to herself so that she can rest. She is so thin and worn out that yesterday when they were being moved she went down on to the floor of the stable and couldn't get up but with the experienced help of Paul our Manager she did eventually get up. Summer is so weak and tired, you can just see it in her face.
Here she is with Robson her little colt foal who is around 2 months old.
SOME MORE ON THE BODMIN FIVE!
Here are Dotty and Dreckley and the baby foal Sweetpea who is around 2 months old. Dotty is the darker mare and Sweetpea is her baby filly foal. They both seem to be in reasonable condition however, our vet has not been able to check them over or take blood samples as yet because we can't get near them to catch them but we are working on it.The lighter mare Dreckley doesn't have a foal but seems to be ok so far. They are now all feeding out of Sally's hand which is excellent so we are getting there.
