The Story of Tiny Tim (updated 2nd June 2010) On 24th November 2009 we took in two of the smallest miniature horses we have seen for a long time. Their names are Dusty and Little Bear, though, as Christmas approached Little Bear became known as Tiny Tim, he is just 20" high or 5 hands. Dusty is a little bigger at 28"or 7 hands. They immediately won everbody over, they are so small. They were kept inside away from the attrocious weather that we endured in the winter months, freezing cold temperatures and then heavy continuous rain that turned the frost hard ground into a quagmire. The mud was too deep to let the poor little chaps out for more than a quick trot round the yard. When the weather got better they both were put into their own new purpose built paddock. It was soon apparent that little Tiny Tim had a problem with one of his back legs. Our good friends from Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Norfolk came to see us this week for the annual spring visit so their Senior Welfare Veterinary Surgeon gave Tiny Tim a thorough examination. The preliminary result was that Tiny Tim may well have to have a major operation on his legs to give him the chance of a happy and pain free life which he so richly deserves. It does mean he will have to be treated at the Newmarket Equine Hospital to where Redwings are taking him today together, of course, with his friend and companion Dusty. They cannot be parted! After much consultation between the vets and the specialist farrier at Newmarket it has been decided to fit Tiny Tim with specially designed shoes to see if that may be an alternative to the drastic kind of surgery that would otherwise be contemplated. The shoes have been fitted and Tiny and Dusty have been taken back to Redwings where his progress will be monitored. He will stay at Redwings for a few weeks in case he needs to go back to the Hospital but he and Dusty will return to Bolenowe as soon as his condition settles down. This will, of course will be very costly. It will be not only be the initial cost of treatment but the ongoing costs over the coming years but it is entirely feasible that whatever is done will improve the length and quality of his life much more than if we had done nothing. We have launched a special appeal and would ask you, please, to give what you can. Click here to go to the Tiny Tim Appeal page
Please note: Any funds raised in excess of that needed for this project will be used for the welfare of the other animals at the Sanctuary.
